Z Pinch fusion rocket (leucome parts)

3, 5 and 10 meters Z Pinch fusion rocket with low fuel consumption. It also include a tank with the same design.

Overview

I tried it in kerbal 0.23.0.395 and it’s compatible.

Hello I am Eric Jacques the author of Alastar Comics/Manga.
I also like to make game mods.
So here you can see the mod I done for KSP, I hope you’ll like it :)

Z Pinch fusion rocket with a lot of thrust and a quite low fuel consumption.
It can be used to lift quite heavy stuff or maybe a spaceship who can do a round trip to an other planet.
The engines has been designed to achieve single-stage-to-orbit capability.

Included In pack.
3, 5 and10-meters Rocket.
5-meter rocket with an air breathing mode. (even more efficient)
A tank with the same design.

Update (Leucome_Parts v4.1) Correction of the Isp with an inverted value between vacuum and atmosphere.

Update (Leucome_Parts v4) New parameters to be compatible with KSP 0.18.2. So now it works with other fuel tanks, but it is probably not compatible with older versions of kerbal.

Update (Leucome_Parts V3)There are 2 new engines with larger reactor, a 5 meters and 10 meters,
It was a test to see how it look. Now they have a normal mapping textures.
The 10 meters engine can not have a full size collision mesh because it get stuck in the lunch tower lol.
Now with the glow animation for the engine heat.

STORY:
I wished to have a rocket who can lift my space station but a realiste one, not just a cheat.

While I was looking for new technologies for rockets,I found the Sabre rocket that can breath air up to mach 5.
I added this feature to the 5 meters thermal reactor and also a toroidal aerospike nozzle.
So I made an engine that has an Isp of 2850 in the atmosphere. ( like the Sabre rocket )
The “vacuum Isp” of 1500 is similar to that of a thermal rocket.

  1. Is this just unlimited fuel or something? Because I saw no fuel gauge.

  2. Never mind, I found the fuel counter. Still, sweet.

    kuris7885 December 4, 2012
  3. Not unlimited but quite efficient. I made the first one to lift heavy space station.

  4. nice job cousin ! it works great

  5. Thanks :)

  6. I noticed that these parts don’t work with any other fuel tanks. Is this supposed to be like that? Also there isn’t a fuel gauge so I have no idea how much fuel I have left. Overheating gauge doesn’t always show up. The fuel gauge under where we see propellents, electrical, liquid fuel, ect… showing no fuel gauge here as well.

  7. Hello! Nice job, but it don’t work with the other fuel tanks.
    It will be perfect if the fusion rocket work with the huge tank of nova punch (with 19000 propellant)

    see you ;)

    ALEX January 18, 2013
  8. Thanks for your comments. It’s supposed to work with all kind of thanks so i’ll take a look maybe something have changed in new kerbal update or I forgot an option somewhere.

    Leucome January 22, 2013
  9. Ok I see, kerbal 0.18.2 have a completely new kind of parameters i’ll need to rewrite every parameters.

    Leucome January 22, 2013
  10. Also noticed that the fuel tank doesn’t work with any of the other rockets. When you get this working it will rock!

    Tenchikun January 22, 2013
  11. I just made an update who fix it. The new feature are implemented and it compatible with new liquidfuel/oxidizer tanks so it suposed to be compatible with all mod that use the same features.

    leucome January 23, 2013
  12. Great work, works perfectly now. One other thing I’d add though is there is a problem with the mesh. Things don’t like to attach well to the outside of the fuel tank and engines. Those that do end up inside the model and are then impossible to click on again

    Tenchikun January 25, 2013
  13. THanks :)
    I’ll take a look to see if I can do something without making a too complex collision models.
    Those kind of electric box aroud the engine are not included in the colision but it’s not suposed to get stuck.

    You can use ctrl-z keyboard shortcut to undo the last part added, until it get fixed.

  14. Nice, however why is ISP higher in atmosphere than in vacuum except for the air breathing one who has good vacuum ISP, should be the other way around.

    magnemoe January 30, 2013
  15. It seem that the value are inverted between vacuum and atmosphere. I’ll upload new version called hum, V4.1 with the parameters at their right place.

    leucome January 31, 2013
  16. Seems like quit a nice mod I really hope that there are more up date o and make sure you place plugins in plugins or other stuff or there could be unlimited file all though this is a great mod keep updating.

    Shroomie Mushroom January 31, 2013
  17. Thanks :)

    I’ll make some more parts and upgrades, for sure.

    I tried to improve the overview page. But the translator also wants to explode trying to decipher all the technical stuff.

  18. While the descriptions and other little things like them need some work, these parts are great for getting massive landers and probes out of Kerbin’s atmosphere.

    though why they generate fuel is confusing…

    Galacticruler February 3, 2013
  19. It seem that i forgot to remove an experimentation that generate fuel .

    leucome February 3, 2013
  20. Hey Could you put in one that has the ridiculous isp that is expected from fusion powered rockets because in most places they seem to quote the 50,000 to 100,000 range. while this would be completely game breaking in terms of balancing I would still appreciate it for building interstellar ships. (I know theres nowhere to go but still).

    Anders Graham February 10, 2013
  21. Was that experiment in anyway related to a bussard ramjet? :)

    Anders Graham February 11, 2013
  22. you should have the option of having the fusion engines actually run on fusing hydrogen ions instead of fuel and oxidizer. it would be more fun, and you could introduce the higher ISP in a way that would actually be realistic.

    Greg Whalen February 17, 2013
  23. Yes depending on what workload you can take you could do quite a few different types of fusion engines (Inertial Confinement, Magnetic Confinement, Magnetised Target Fusion. I would like to try HyperEditing Dres out to ridiculous distance (at least 4-4.5 AU) and doing a maned landing and return mission.

    Anders Graham February 18, 2013
  24. Salut leucome! Désolé de parler en français, je suis assez nul en anglais. Je suis allé voir ton sympathique site artistique, j’ai vu que tu y proposais le français alors tu devrais pourvoir me comprendre.

    Merci d’avoir rendu les moteurs à fusion compatibles avec le carburant liquide. Il y a cependant un petit problème lié au valeur proportionnelle sur le rapport poids/puissance, coût et ISP entre les moteurs.
    Par exemple le moteur à fusion de 5m atmosphérique:
    puissance= 2550
    poids =37t
    ISP vide=1520
    ISP atmo=2850
    cout= 3500

    Ensuite je prend le moteur à fusion 10m:
    puissance= 2600 (seulement 50 de plus)
    poids=57t (20t en plus pour 50 de poussée supllémentaire???!!)
    ISP vide=1280 ( contre les 1520 du moteur de 5m)
    ISP atmo=480 (contre les 2850 du moeur de 5m???!!)
    cout= 12000 ( 4X plus cher que le moteur de 5m??????!!)

    En bref, aucun intérêt de prendre le moteur de 10m, plus lourd, plus cher, moins performant.
    J’aurais la même remarque à faire entre le moteur de 3m et le moteur de 5m standart.
    Moteur à fusion de 3m a une puissance trop élevée et un ISP trop faible.

    A moins d’une erreur de ma part concernant les valeurs des moteurs, je testerais d’autres valeurs plus proportionnelles et les soumettrais dans un prochain post. Merci de m’avoir lu et à bientot.

    Alex

  25. What do you think about that:

    fusion 3m = 900power 18t (ISP 1100 et atmo 462)…… cost 8000

    fusion 5m = 2450power 61t (ISP 1580 et atmo 480)…… cost 11000

    fusion atmos 5m = 2450power 70t (ISP 1475 et 2850 atmo)……cost 18000

    fusion 10m = 6400power 195t (ISP 2550 et atmo 480)….. cost 24000

    Alex PLANDE March 8, 2013
  26. @Alex Je vais réviser la puissance et le poids des moteur.

    thanks your numbers look quite good. :)

  27. these seem a bit OP…
    I can buy into the thrust values, but the not at the rate they consume fuel.
    To each their own, but personaly I try and stay away from the so-called ‘cheater parts’
    did a little test with the 3 meter engine from this pack…
    home command pod+parachute (for aerodynamics really..) a fuel tank, the 3m Z engine, and 4 delta deluxe winglets, the tank used was from kw parts pack…SC-4 LFT, holds 10935 lf 13365 ox, total mass of 135
    the engine didn’t cut out till the altimeter was showing 2658km……..
    A SSTO engine would be nice, but this is a bit OP if your trying to keep some degree of realism in your KSP game…
    But still great engines….and honestly some of the best modeling yet, these things do look absolutely wonderful

  28. I love this mod are you going to update 19.1 ?

    Fish_Stick May 10, 2013

  30. mmm… lunch tower

    Aaron Lindros June 7, 2013
  31. Would it be possible to make larger tanks that would match the larger engines?

    DROIDOMEGA June 13, 2013
  32. hi leucome!
    Can you update for the 0.20.2 or 0.21?

    I thank you beforehand for your answer

    Alex PLANDE July 4, 2013
  33. Thanks everyone’s. Sorry for a late update, I was busy with my youtube channel comic book and rc planes stuff so I did not played KSP alot.

    i’ll pronably update it this month and fix the thrust value too.

    These are the only amendments …
    and have a very good mod!

  39. Sorry
    LiquidFuel -> 1980
    Oxidizer -> 2420
