Subassembly Saver / Loader v0.1.2

Subassembly Loader allows you to save chunks of your ships as templates for later use in other vessels.

Overview

  • Save different arrangements of engines as templates for future rockets.
  • Save Landers for later pasting into other constructions.
  • Make templates of your huge ascent stages to save having to remake them every time you launch a large payload.
  • To report any bugs/issues please post a message in the addon’s forum thread.

    What’s new in v0.1.2?

  • New file browser System: You can now save your subassembles under different categories.
  • Stock ships won’t show up in the file listings any more.
  • You can add/edit/remove categories by going to “./PluginData/subassemblyLoader/subassemblies/” and mucking about with the folders there.
  • Plugin is no longer dependant on having a dummy part present.
  • Fixed a bug where the textures would be extremely blurry if played with texture resolution turned down.
  •

    Notes:

If you have subassemblies saved with the previous version you’ll have to manually copy them from “./saves/scenarios/Ships/{VAB/SPH}/” to “./PluginData/subassemblyLoader/subassemblies/ (sorry about that).

    Installation

Extract 'Plugins' and 'PluginData' to your KSP folder.

    How to use

The mod adds an extra icon to the top of the VAB/SPH.

    * Drag a group of parts to the icon to save them as a subassembly.
    * Click the icon without any parts selected to open a menu and load a saved subassemby into the game.

    6. OMG! How do we lived without this mod for so long?!
      Awesome!

    7. @Cpt_Franklin Nothing really.

      * Added the plugin o spaceport.

      * Added a couple of dummy files to the save folder so the dir would be created when the mod was installed via KSPMM.

      * Removed the need for a part to be installed.

If it worked before then there’s really no need to get the new version.

    10. Great work on this! Your mod serves a vital function until proper sub-assembly support is added to the game!

Payloader was great, but always felt like a work-around, and besides that has not worked properly with my game for more than a month. Your elegant solution provides real functionality to the game. Thank you!

    11. This is great! It interfaces with the game very smoothly and it’s so simple to use. This should be a default part of the game, definitely recommending this to my friends who play!

      boggysandman February 21, 2013
    12. this should be in the game !!!

      Alek Sandr February 21, 2013
    13. Awesome, and less problematic than the other mod called “Payloader” or so. I’m not sure how that works, but the install tutorial was sounding just, dangerous, and I didn’t want to damage my install.

    21. i like this add-on but one thing thats got me is that i can not save my builds all way get that error root part of selected sub has no free nodes well sorry to say but there is all ways at lease 2 free nodes any work around or planing on fixing this.

it not very user friendly we need more freedom

      thanks

    22. Maybe Im just stupid, but how can I save some subassambly? The puzzle icon offers me only load some..

      Jan March 11, 2013
    23. Currently locks up for KSP 0.19.0.

      Knossos March 17, 2013
    24. Jan: You click on the subassembly you want to save (if you want to save everything below the capsule, click the first thing beneath the capsule), which detaches it from the craft. While dragging the craft around, click the puzzle icon.

      Hremsfeld March 18, 2013
    25. This one definitely made my construction more efficient. Especially since center of mass can be displyed only towards one command pod, so when you have a ship + cargo, you cannot balance it.

      elkar March 24, 2013
    26. that error root part of selected sub has no free nodes well sorry to say but there is all ways at lease 2 free nodes is pissing me off im sorry till its fixed i will not support it to many build cant be saved please fix this, what does it matter if theres a free node anyways we load it and build it to fit to what we want it to fit

    31. one of the best mod i have ever seen in KSP!

      takishima louis April 8, 2013
    32. Awesome mod but unfortionatly it doesn’t function properly for me. Whatever I do, I can only use one attachement point (the last I added to the model, I think) to connect the imported model.

All of the other attachment points dont show the green sphere and can in no way be attached

      Wybe April 16, 2013
    33. Your addon made a bug in one of my ships were the name changed to “HELLOWORLDHELLOWORLDHELLOWORLD” and split the whole spacecraft into seperate parts, so when i load it now, it crashes game.

      Eric Koskovich April 18, 2013
    34. Quite useful, if one can get past that “Error, no free node…” thingy. In needs to go away and just let us save, what we want to save.

      Zhuikin April 19, 2013
    35. This is one fine piece of work thanks for the creation.

      BlackHoleSun April 21, 2013
    36. The one major flaw is the lack of a “Delete Subassembly” button

      Spencer H. April 24, 2013
    37. “Idiot Proofing” only creates more problems in the end. The whole isAttachable aspect is rather… annoying.

Should be fairly easy to remove; but the game isn’t going to crash if you load an invalid subassembly (err, I don’t think it will); so let idiots be idiots. (Or, let people load sub-assemblies that are intended to be added symmetrically)

      Fel April 28, 2013
    38. Great mod, should be part of the (unmodded) game, but there is a problem with struts, do they dissapear completely, or just connect to themselves? If they don’t dissapear, could you make it do that? Otherwise the part count goes up unneccasarily (but it would be best if you could figure out how to keep them as they are of course).

Otherwise great mod, looks and feels like it was meant to be there.

      Maxonis May 3, 2013
    39. This has saved me loads of work redoing rockets.

      Nigel Stutt May 3, 2013
    40. The forum thread seems to have disappeared.

      AndersW May 3, 2013
    41. Seriously, remove the ‘Root part has no blah blah’ safety mechanism. I can’t save half of my probes. I don’t even know the logic behind this ‘feature’ – not the programming logic about what determines whether a part is okay to save or not, nor the logic of even having that feature, since there’s lots of legitimate designs that won’t save.

If people manage to save a broken design, let them. I even tried to get around it by saving a .craft file and putting it in the subassembly loader, and you even ‘checked’ the loading process too, and it deletes the probe.

A horrible, burdensome feature marring an otherwise perfect plugin and idea.

      Frostiken May 4, 2013
    42. The ‘root part’ issue so much of you seem to be having is due to a command pod being in the build your saving. With a command pod its just an assembly, not a sub-assembly =P

Also ive noticed this mod will sometimes not rebuild saves properly. Mainly Ive noticed this with external fuel lines, struts, and the actual staging order can sometimes get messed up. Not o problem on simple builds, but more hassle than its worth on complex fuel-staged rockets.
All in all though its a great mod, and despite its few small flaws it does save a lot of time.
less building, more launching = more space chaos!

      Randy Fuessel May 5, 2013
    43. Excellent! Thank you. This will certainly “make do” until this feature is officially added to the game; which the wiki-page indicates is planned.
However, I agree with the other posters asking to have that “invalid sub-assembly, no free nodes” thing removed, as it IS very annoying.
Also, as someone else mentioned, delete sub-assembly would be very welcome. I would also say “add-category” and “delete category” would be very nice, so we could do that in-game instead of having to exit and mess with folders for such manually.

Here’s that last satellite that wouldn’t save, but restructured. I moved the probe core to the ‘bottom’ with the fuel tanks on top. The basic design is the same.

It saves as a subassembly without an issue.

      Frostiken May 7, 2013
    45. This is very useful, however i would like an option to delete subassemblies from the menu.

      AutoSynthesis May 10, 2013
    46. Really great but the only thing is you should be able to delete assemblies.

      Andres Aviles May 11, 2013
    47. Great mod! Thank you this saves alot of time. I have a question. I have noticed that my asparagus staging disappears. i have to re-stage the fuel tanks everytime i load a sub assembly. Anyone else having that problem? this in no way effects my opinion about the mod. It should be in the regular game.

      Alex Wolf May 14, 2013
    48. Great idea, very practical and saves so much time. Thx!
